Psalm
2:1-12 |
1 Why do the
nations conspire and the peoples plot in vain? 2 The kings of the
earth take their stand and the rulers gather together against the LORD and
against his Anointed One. 3 "Let us break their chains,"
they say, "and throw off their fetters." 4 The One
enthroned in heaven laughs; the Lord scoffs at them. 5 Then he
rebukes them in his anger and terrifies them in his wrath, saying,6
"I have installed my King on Zion, my holy hill." 10 Therefore, you kings, be
wise; be warned, you rulers of the earth. 11 Serve the LORD with fear and rejoice with trembling. |

21:7-12 |
7 For the king trusts in the LORD;
through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken. 8 Your hand will lay hold on
all your enemies; your right hand will seize your foes. 9 At the time of your
appearing you will make them like a fiery furnace. In his wrath the LORD will
swallow them up, and his fire will consume them. 10 You will destroy their descendants from the earth,
their posterity from mankind. 11
Though they plot evil against you and devise wicked schemes, they cannot
succeed; 12 for you
will make them turn their backs when you aim at them with drawn bow. |

righteousness and the peoples in his truth. |

Psalm 110:1-7 |
1 The LORD says to my Lord:
"Sit at my right hand until I make your enemies a footstool for your
feet." 2 The LORD will extend your mighty scepter from Zion;
you will rule in the midst of your enemies. 3 Your troops will be
willing on your day of battle. Arrayed in holy majesty, from the womb of the
dawn you will receive the dew of your youth. 4 The LORD has
sworn and will not change his mind: "You are a priest forever, in the
order of Melchizedek." 5 The Lord is at your right hand; he
will crush kings on the day of his wrath. 6 He will judge the
nations, heaping up the dead and
crushing the rulers of the whole earth. 7 He will drink from a
brook beside the way; therefore he will lift up his head.

Branch of the LORD will be beautiful and glorious, and the fruit of the land

are recorded among the living in Jerusalem. 4 The Lord will wash
away the filth of the women of Zion; he will cleanse the bloodstains from
Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire. 5 Then the
LORD will create over all of Mount Zion and over those who assemble there a
cloud of smoke by day and a glow of flaming fire by night; over all the glory
will be a canopy. 6 It will be a shelter and shade from the heat

Isaiah 13:9-13 |
9 See, the day of the LORD is coming—a
cruel day, with wrath and fierce anger—to make the land desolate and destroy
the sinners within it. 10
The stars of heaven and their constellations will not show their light. The
rising sun will be darkened and the moon will not give its light. 11 I will punish the world for
its evil, the wicked for their sins. I will put an end to the arrogance of
the haughty and will humble the pride of the ruthless. 12 I will make man scarcer
than pure gold, more rare than the gold of Ophir. 13 Therefore I will make the
heavens tremble; and the earth will shake from its place at the wrath of the
LORD Almighty, in the day of his burning anger. |

1 Woe to the land
of whirring wings along the rivers of Cush, 2 which sends envoys
by sea in papyrus boats over the water. Go, swift messengers, to a people
tall and smooth-skinned, to a people feared far and wide, an aggressive
nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers. 3 All
you people of the world, you who live on the earth, when a banner is raised
on the mountains, you will see it, and when a trumpet sounds, you will hear
it. 4 This is what the LORD says to me: "I will remain quiet
and will look on from my dwelling place, like shimmering heat in the
sunshine, like a cloud of dew in the heat of harvest." 5 For,
before the harvest, when the blossom is gone and the flower becomes a
ripening grape, he will cut off the shoots with pruning knives, and cut down
and take away the spreading branches. 6 They will all be left to
the mountain birds of prey and to the wild animals; the birds will feed on
them all summer, the wild animals all winter. 7 At that time gifts
will be brought to the LORD Almighty from a people tall and smooth-skinned,
from a people feared far and wide, an aggressive nation of strange speech,
whose land is divided by rivers—the gifts will be brought to Mount Zion, the
place of the Name of the LORD Almighty. |

Isaiah 24:19-23 |
19 The earth is broken up, the earth is
split asunder, the earth is thoroughly shaken. 20 The earth reels like a drunkard, it sways like a hut in
the wind; so heavy upon it is the guilt of its rebellion that it falls—never
to rise again. 21
In that day the LORD will punish the powers in the heavens above and the
kings on the earth below. 22
They will be herded together like prisoners bound in a dungeon; they will be
shut up in prison and be punished after many days. 23 The moon will be abashed,
the sun ashamed; for the LORD Almighty will reign on Mount Zion and in
Jerusalem, and before its elders, gloriously. |

a banquet of aged wine—the best of meats and the finest of wines. 7
On this mountain he will destroy the shroud that enfolds all peoples, the
sheet that covers all nations; 8 he will swallow up death forever.

the disgrace of his people from all the earth. The LORD has spoken. |

27 See, the Name of the
LORD comes from afar, with burning anger and dense clouds of smoke; his lips
are full of wrath, and his tongue is a consuming fire. 28 His breath is like a
rushing torrent, rising up to the neck. He shakes the nations in the sieve of
destruction; he places in the jaws of the peoples a bit that leads them
astray. 29 And you
will sing as on the night you celebrate a holy festival; your hearts will
rejoice as when people go up with flutes to the mountain of the LORD, to the
Rock of Israel. 30
The LORD will cause men to hear his majestic voice and will make them see his
arm coming down with raging anger and consuming fire, with cloudburst,
thunderstorm and hail. 31
The voice of the LORD will shatter Assyria; with his scepter he will strike
them down. 32 Every

tambourines and harps, as he fights them in battle with the blows of his arm.

Woe to you, Bethsaida! For if the miracles that were performed in you had
been performed in Tyre and Sidon, they would have repented long ago in
sackcloth and ashes. 22 But I tell you, it will be more bearable
for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you. 23 And
you, Capernaum, will you be lifted to the heavens? No, you will go down to

Sodom, it would have remained to this day. 24 But I tell you that
it will be more bearable for Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

the sinners within it.

Sovereign LORD says: Disaster! An unheard-of disaster is coming. 6 The end has come! The end
has come! It has roused itself against you. It has come! 7 Doom has come upon you—you

not joy, upon the mountains. 8
I am about to pour out my wrath on you and spend my anger against you; I will
judge you according to your conduct and repay you for all your detestable
practices. 9 I will
not look on you with pity or spare you; I will repay you in accordance with
your conduct and the detestable practices among you. Then you will know that

3 Now the glory
of the God of Israel went up from above the cherubim, where it had been, and
moved to the threshold of the temple. Then the LORD called to the man clothed
in linen who had the writing kit at his side 4 and said to him,
"Go throughout the city of Jerusalem and put a mark on the foreheads of
those who grieve and lament over all the detestable things that are done in
it." 5 As I
listened, he said to the others, "Follow him through the city and kill,
without showing pity or compassion. 6 Slaughter old men, young men and maidens, women and
children, but do not touch anyone who has the mark. Begin at my
sanctuary." So they began with the elders who were in front of the
temple. 7 Then he
said to them, "Defile the temple and fill the courts with the slain.
Go!" So they went out and began killing throughout the city. |

The voice of the LORD will shatter Assyria; with his scepter he will strike

nation of strange speech, whose land is divided by rivers. 3 All
you people of the world, you who live on the earth, when a banner is raised

Why are your garments red, like those of one treading the winepress? 3
"I have trodden the winepress alone; from the nations no one was with
me. I trampled them in my anger and trod them down in my wrath; their blood
spattered my garments, and I stained all my clothing. 4 For the
day of vengeance was in my heart, and the year of my redemption has come. 5
I looked, but there was no one to help, I was appalled that no one gave

Chapter 20 |
Psalm

Psalm
21:7-12 |
7 For the king trusts in the LORD;
through the unfailing love of the Most High he will not be shaken.

Psalm
96:12 |
12 let the fields be jubilant, and
everything in them. Then all the trees of the forest will sing for joy; 13 they will sing before the

righteousness and the peoples in his truth. |

and avenge myself on my enemies. 25
I will turn my hand against you; I will thoroughly purge away your dross and
remove all your impurities. 26
I will restore your judges as in days of old, your counselors as at the
beginning. Afterward you will be called the City of Righteousness, the

10Sing to the LORD
a new song, his praise from the ends of the earth, you who go down to the
sea, and all that is in it, you islands, and all who live in them. 11
Let the desert and its towns raise their voices; let the settlements where
Kedar lives rejoice. Let the people of Sela sing for joy; let them shout from
the mountaintops. 12 Let them give glory to the LORD and proclaim
his praise in the islands. 13 The LORD will march out like a
mighty man, like a warrior he will stir up his zeal; with a shout he will
raise the battle cry and will triumph over his enemies. 14
"For a long time I have kept silent, I have been quiet and held myself
back. But now, like a woman in childbirth, I cry out, I gasp and pant. 15
I will lay waste the mountains and hills and dry up all their vegetation; I
will turn rivers into islands and dry up the pools. 16 I will lead
the blind by ways they have not known, along unfamiliar paths I will guide
them; I will turn the darkness into light before them and make the rough
places smooth. These are the things I will do; I will not forsake them. 17
But those who trust in idols, who say to images, 'You are our gods,' will be
turned back in utter shame. |

portion, and instead of disgrace they will rejoice in their inheritance; and

Isaiah 66:15-18 |
15 See, the LORD is coming
with fire, and his chariots are like a whirlwind; he will bring down his
anger with fury, and his rebuke with flames of fire. 16 For with fire and with his
sword the LORD will execute judgment upon all men, and many will be those
slain by the LORD. 17
"Those who consecrate and purify themselves to go into the gardens,
following the one in the midst of those who eat the flesh of pigs and rats
and other abominable things—they will meet their end together," declares
the LORD. 18
"And I, because of their actions and their imaginations, am about to
come and gather all nations and tongues, and they will come and see my glory.

Jerusalem by a spirit of judgment and a spirit of fire. 5 Then the
LORD will create over all of Mount Zion and over those who assemble there a

Symbols Used In
the Bible
Here
are some of the most common examples of symbols that will enable you to connect
the themes underlying Scripture. Not all
of these are symbolic of these things every time, but especially when a given
Scripture is clearly in parable or metaphorical form, it is good to check and
see if they fit before looking for other interpretations.
The
information below comes from a compilation of Internet sites as well as my own study.

Number of the
antichrist. 6 denotes short of perfection but looks close to perfection. In
Revelation beasts, one from the abyss (Rev 11:7), one from the sea (Rev 1:1)
and one from the earth (Rev 1:11). Can these make up an unholy trinity that
to man looks like the real thing? (Tony’s
musings only. NOT to be taken as fact, just thoughts.) |

Seraphim:
mentioned
in Isaiah
6:2 Isaiah
6:3 Isaiah
6:6 Isaiah
6:7 . This word means fiery ones, in allusion, as is supposed, to
their burning love. They are represented as "standing" above the King
as he sat upon his throne, ready at once to minister unto him. Their form
appears to have been human, with the addition of wings. (See ANGELS .) This word, in the
original, is used elsewhere only of the "fiery serpents" ( Numbers
21:6 Numbers
21:8 ; Deuteronomy 8:15 ; Compare Isaiah
14:29 ; 30:6 )
sent by God as his instruments to inflict on the people the righteous penalty
of sin.
The
root of Seraphim comes either from the Hebrew verb saraph ('to
burn') or the Hebrew noun saraph (a fiery, flying serpent).
Because the term appears several times with reference to the serpents
encountered in the wilderness (Num. 21.8, Deut. 8.15; Isa. 14.29; 30.6), it has
often been understood to refer to "fiery serpents." From this it has
also often been proposed that the seraphim were serpentine in form and in some
sense "fiery" creatures or associated with fire. http://www.pantheon.org/articles/s/seraphim.html
The root-verb שרף (sarap)
means to burn, and this always in a literal sense. HAW Theological Wordbook of
the Old Testament reports that there are up to fifteen words in Hebrew that mean
to burn, but sarap is used mostly in the sense of
consuming or destructive burning (of a house, Judges 12:1; city, Joshua 6:24;
idols, Exodus 32:20; dead people 1 Samuel 31:12; people executed, Joshua 7:25). http://www.abarim-publications.com/Meaning/Seraphim.html#.U67vfaz9EcE
Seraphim in
Hebrew means “flaming serpents.” In Judeo-Christian tradition, the Seraphim are
the order of angels who surround the Throne
of the Presence. They appear by name in the bible only once, in the vision of
Isaiah: http://symboldictionary.net/?p=2251
Egyptian
god |
Characteristic |
Plague |
How
the plague addressed the god’s characteristics |
Osiris/Hapi |
The
god of the Underworld, Crop Fertility, Renewal, Resurrection & Nile
River. Considered god of the Nile since the flooding of the Nile brought
fertility to the land. |
Blood |
The
water of the Nile was considered the life-blood of Osiris. By God turning it
to real blood, He was demonstrating that He was much more powerful than
Osiris. Osiris needed the good water of the Nile to live. With the Nile water
now blood, it represented horrible death instead of wonderful life. Seven
days the water throughout all the land of Egypt remained in this state,
unsuitable for drinking, the perfect
length of time. |
Hekt |
The goddess with
a frog’s head. The Egyptians believed the frog was the symbol of the
life-giving power-goddess, Hekt. She was the goddess who oversaw the women,
the mid-wives, who helped women have babies. She was thought to blow the
breath of life into the nostrils of the new babies Egyptian Goddess
of Fertility, Water, Renewal |
Frogs |
When
the True God gave Moses and Aaron the power to bring forth frogs by the
millions (Exodus 8:1-15), He was showing His power over Hekt. There were so
many frogs that they were bringing destruction (Psalm 78:45) to the land. The
frogs didn't just stay in the pools of water and the river. They jumped into
the houses. They jumped in their beds. The Egyptians could not even cook
because the frogs were in their ovens. No one could take a step without
stepping on a frog. |
Seb or Geb |
Earth god, |
Lice |
The
very dust that was referred to in the creation process of man is now used to
plague men, as a reminder of his mortality and sin which both lead to death |
Khepri or Scarabus |
Egyptian god of resurrection, creation, movement of the Sun, rebirth; beetle-headed |
Swarm of flies |
|
Apis or Hathor
|
Egyptian god of strength and
fertility, was depicted as a bull. goddess of love and protection; possibly
absorbed Bat, the cow-headed goddess.
bull cult gods Apis, Buchis, and Mneuis . bulls sometimes considered
embodiment of Ptah and Ra
|
Cattle &
other livestock dying |
Disease
on the livestock - horses, donkeys, camels, cattle, sheep and goats - but
those of the Israelites were unharmed. This shows God’s ascendancy of the
Egyptian false gods and their supposed power to protect the Egyptians. It
also showed God’s power is much greater than that of false gods. |
Isis or Neit |
Isis: goddess of medicine and peace Im-Hotep: real person turned deity, patron of wisdom and
medicine Sekhmet: lion-headed deity of plagues, believed to bring
about or prevent epidemics or pestilence |
Boils |
Ashes
of furnace turned into fine dust and caused boils. In this plague the boils
show the Egyptian false god could not protect against plagues. When God
brought boils the false god could not bring health. |
Shu or Nut
|
The goddess of
the atmosphere. Shu: god of air; associated with calm or cooling Tefnut: goddess of water/moisture; linked to sun and moon |
Hail & fire
mingled with hail |
Flax
and barley destroyed. These were two of the main crops needed by the
Egyptians to avoid famine. God used the atmosphere to destroy these crops
showing His power and ascendancy over to Egyptian false gods that they
thought would protect them. Once again the false gods were found wanting but
this time the gods of the atmosphere and fertility were both involved. |
Seth |
Egyptian God of
Storms and Disorder Senehem: possibly locust-headed, god of protection from
ravages of pests |
Locusts |
God
sent locusts to destroy the crops and other plant life that remained after
the fire and hail. The Egyptian false god had not power to stop or even slow
down God’s plague. Again the false god was totally impotent. Notice that in
this plague the locusts were absolutely everywhere. Only the Israelites
escaped. |
Ra |
The sun god. Ra or Amon-Ra: god of the sun Horus: sky god; sun was his right eye, moon
his left. |
Darkness |
The
Egyptian god Ra was thought to bring light. God showed Ra brought darkness
rather that light. The darkness was like nothing they had ever experienced or
had ever heard about. They were experiencing the darkness of their lives
without God. The darkness that comes with following Satan |
Pharaoh |
Egyptians
believed the Pharaoh to be the incarnated deity Ra. The firstborn son was to
take his father's place Min: god of reproduction Ra: god who was believed to create all
things d. Anubis: god of the dead and embalming; Ex 11:7 refers to no dogs barking, possibly referring to jackal(or dog)-headed
Anubis having no power over Israelites during this plague. |
Death of
firstborn |
The
Pharaoh was thought to be a physical representation of the sun god Ra.
Pharaoh's son was not special. He died just like the cows in the field. This
plague of death was God's final way to show that He was more powerful than
any Egyptian god. Aker, the protector from evil spirits, with his statues at
the door of homes and palaces could not keep God out of the homes. Aten the
creator of man and the nurturing spirit of the world could not keep the
Egyptians safe from the One True God. |
